Billionaire
Billionaire stories are a relatively new fetish, in that like so many of the others, this has a long-standing basis but we can pinpoint specifically when it became a big seller: It became a big seller in the wake of Fifty Shades of Grey. There’s not much else to it. In its purest form you want to deliver the same kind of sex that Fifty Shades delivered. However, a similar power dynamic works about as well.
The formula is also fairly set. The viewpoint character is almost always a woman: she needs money so she finds a billionaire who wants sex in exchange. There are exceptions, of course, as with everything.
Only, it’s never ‘vanilla’ sex. It’s always pushing the bounds of what the heroine is really comfortable with. If she’s a virgin, it might just be giving up her virginity, but more commonly this mixes with BDSM and rape themes. It’s important to keep in mind that where BDSM is all about unspoken boundaries and trust, this is the opposite, without becoming really unpleasant like rape fantasies often do—I’ll get into those later.
Billionaire fantasies are about allowing lines to be crossed, about mistrust and yet, possibly, love in spite of that. It’s pretty much a great excuse to portray unhealthy relationships, and that’s something you have to understand if you’re going to write billionaire erotica. However, in the wake of Twilight and subsequently Fifty Shades, readers often want unhealthy relationships in their stories. So try not to rub in their face that it’s unhealthy, just describe the relationship in its codependent glory without comment.
